Rehoming Assistance Program

Friends of Rabbits offers a re-homing assistance program. We would be happy to help you find a good home for your pet rabbit by providing a courtesy listing on the Petfinder adoption website. You will need to meet with potential adopters yourself, but you are welcome to use the adoption application and guidelines on our website as a guide to screening adopters. We’ve had good success with this program and have recently helped find new homes for several rabbits.

Friends of Rabbits is a local foster-based rescue that pulls rabbits from overcrowded local shelters that do not have any more space for them. We receive multiple requests every week from shelters throughout Maryland and Virginia to take rabbits that are scheduled to be euthanized. In addition, we work with other rescues and shelters and often take in rabbits from large confiscations in animal cruelty or neglect cases.  We also rescue abandoned and stray rabbits that have no where else to go. We operate at full capacity with a lengthy waiting list of shelters asking us to pull rabbits. We receive no government funding or grants to support our rescue. Due to our limited resources and foster home spaces we are unable to accept owner-relinquished rabbits from the many people who contact us with requests, typically several every week.

Please do not list your pet rabbit on Craigslist, NextDoor, etc. or offer him “free to a good home” because unscrupulous people sometimes take rabbits to use as snake food or dog bait!

If you need to re-home your rabbit(s) sooner, we recommend you contact your local shelter for surrender

To qualify for our rehoming assistance, we require:

  • They must be spay/neutered with verification.
  • They have seen a vet in the last year. (It’s ok if they are not perfectly healthy)
  • Highly recommend that you charge at least $50 per rabbit. This prevents rabbits falling prey to unwanted people and places.

We look forward to assisting you with finding a good home for your pet rabbit(s).  Please use this form to receive further details about listing your rabbit(s) on Petfinder.
